Changes in the Movement of Money Means Changes in IT Contracts

by admin

The changes brought in by the government to the way in which taxation is levied against employees and freelancers is bringing about a whole host of new work opportunities for IT contractors. While contracting has always been responsive in terms of its ability to react to changes in income and revenue, IT contractors with experience of working in financial services can expect to see a number of contracts springing up as organisations seek developers with an understanding of finance systems to bring their IT up to date with the recent changes. This will naturally mean an influx in work for what were previously client-light contractors, it would be a good idea for these contractors to look to companies like Brookson – IT contractor accountants.

In addition, as more people move to managing their money online, there is a growing requirement for the development of financial systems that enable management of money on the go. E Read more…

Consumer Sentiment Pushes Stocks Higher on Friday (FB, JWN)

by Timothy Wood

On Friday it was announced that consumer sentiment in the US rose more than expected, sending stocks higher by the end of the day. While this was great news much focus still remained on the subject of quantitative easing and what the Fed plans on doing in the near future. Tech stocks posted gains in the wake of their IPOs or IPO anniversaries including Facebook (FB), Marketo Inc. (MKTO) and Tableau Software (DATA). Nordstrom (JWN) fell on Friday after reporting a drop in Q1 profit and lowering its forecast for 2014. The US dollar rose above 103 yen for the first time in four years and gold dropped for the seventh session in a row.

Boxee CEO on the future of TV: Aereo, Cloud DVRs, Netflix and Apple TV, oh my.

by Timothy Wood

Boxee CEO Avner Ronen recently sat down with me for a wide-ranging video interview on the state of television, and its future. His company just released a $99 device that uses the Amazon cloud to give its users an infinitely-sized DVR. If it takes off, the Boxee TV could fundamentally change the way cable customers consume content and the way they pay for it. Users will also be able to watch their recordings from devices like the iPad. Can Boxee play nice with an industry its trying to disrupt? Ronen says yes. But between the Aereo lawsuit and the Apple TV rumor-mill, its a crowded, competitive landscape. So, can the company keep competing with the next generation of startups that have the television industry in their targets?

You’re Responsible for Knowing Your Bank Balance

by Timothy Wood

Lately I’ve been trying to decide whether or not to get a Target Red debit card. As much as I shop at Target, the five percent discount would be nice, but there are some drawbacks. I’m still looking into it and will probably make a post about what I’ve learned once I make my decision.

Anyway, the one con that people cite over and over again is the fact that transactions completed with the card take a few days to post to your account. Even though it’s labeled a “debit” card, it doesn’t behave like the one issued by your bank, which typically posts transactions instantaneously, or at least on the same day. The Target ca

Benefits of a Gold MasterCard

by admin

mastercard gold

A good credit card isn’t just a piece of plastic. It’s a financial and lifestyle tool, one with many more uses than simply paying with credit instead of cash.

The best cards, to begin with, offer low introductory rates for balance transfers (from other credit cards or loans) and purchases. Clydesdale Bank’s Gold MasterCard, for example, comes with a 0% rate on balance transfers for the first 16 months. That alone amounts to a tremendous savings for anybody with any kind of interest-accruing balance on another card. Coupl Read more…

Tech Stocks Help Markets Rebound; ABI/Modelo Deal Settled by DOJ (MCD, BUD)

by Timothy Wood

Late reports of earnings yesterday and G20 statements led the markets higher on Friday. Both Google (GOOG) and Microsofts (MSFT) higher-than-expected earnings lifted the tech-heavy Nasdaq. McDonalds (MCD) was one of Fridays decliners, dropping 2% after reporting flat Q1 earnings and sales. Anheuser-Busch InBev (BUD) and Grupo Modelo finally made an agreement with the Justice Department that will help move their merger forward. After a week of back-and-forth yield swings, Treasurys fell flat on Friday. Both the US dollar and the euro gained against the yen after the G20 countries did not oppose recent Japanese monetary policy.
