Earthquake Update: 6.5 struck Southern Mexico

A powerful 6.5 preliminary magnitude earthquake has hit southern Mexico.

The powerful quake was felt by millions across the region, hitting around 2.22am local time.

The earthquake was centred near the city of Tlaxiaco in Oaxaca state, in southern Mexico, near the Pacific Ocean.

The quake was very shallow according to data provided by the US Geological Survey, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake was powerful enough to sway sky scrapers several hundred kilometers away in Mexico City.

Thousands of people took to social networking site Twitter to say they had felt the quake. Any deaths, injuries or damage from the June 30, 2010 quake has yet to be reported.

A security guard in an apartment building in Mexico City, Pedro Salazar, said, ”I felt it like I almost always do. People came running out of the building.” A civil protection officer told Reuters that so far there were no reports of injuries or damage.

Power and phone connections still appear to be working in Mexico City.

Gilberto Lopez of the Oaxaca state civil defense department said his office is still assessing the situation and did not yet know if there were injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 2.22 a.m. local time (0722 GMT; 3:22 a.m. EDT). Its center was about 75 miles (120 kilometers) west-southwest of Oaxaca city, the state capital, and 220 miles (355 kilometers) south-southeast of Mexico City.
